One of the best gifts I've ever given myself is the gift of membership in Women Who Hike (WWH). I may have started my hiking life with a fine group of Boy Scouts, but I've found that these gals are the most giving, encouraging group of fellow hikers I could ask for.

It's true, I have a problem. It's an obsession really. Patches. Or more specifically collecting them. I suppose the collection started innocently enough. I wanted a keepsake to remind me where I’d been on one of my first hiking trips. Some might say it's gotten out of control.

One of the more valuable skills for hiking is the ability to read a map. Paired with a compass and the knowledge of how to use them together to find your way, you have a valuable tool that isn't reliant on batteries, satellites or cell towers.
